RESTORATION
| Here at Murray Scott-Nelson we are able to create the ultimate Austin Healey. We have been restoring Healeys for over 30 years with many concours wins to our name. |
 |
We begin by completely stripping the vehicle to a bare shell. The chassis substructure is sandblasted to remove all the old paint, underseal and corrosion. After mounting the chassis on our jig to check its alignment, our next step is to restore the chassis substructure by renewing or repairing the floors, chassis sections, sills and wheel
arches etc. as required. With the chassis substructure restored back to its original
specification, it is then sprayed with the highest quality etch primer. |
 |
| We then start on
the outer panels. The steel doors, bonnet and boot lid are sent for specialist ultrasonic
cleaning. The delicate aluminium front and rear shrouds are meticulously taken back
to bare metal by hand and inspected for any corrosion or accident damage. With all
the outer panels back to bare metal, we then assess the condition and where possible
we will always use the original panels. Repairing as required using off the shelf
repair panels or custom make a repair section. Once all the outer panels are repaired or renewed, we then begin the painstaking process of fitting them to the restored chassis substructure, paying particular attention to all panel alignment and door fit. The pre paint preparation also includes fitting the grille, lights, bumpers, windscreen, locks and door handles etc. etc. When completed to our satisfaction, all the panels are then removed and sprayed inside and out with etch primer. |
 |
| Painting a classic car is an art in itself. We begin with the chassis substructure, all the
joints are seam sealed, the underside and wheel arches are treated with anti stone chip
(a modern flexible undercoat for maximum protection) then treated with a 2 pack
acrylic primer and finally sprayed in its finished colour. During this process the
structure is turned 360 degrees to ensure 100% coverage and maximum rust
protection. |
 |
| The inside of the wings and front alloy shroud are also treated with antistone chip for maximum protection. The doors, bonnet, boot lid and alloy rear shroud are thoroughly prepared in 2 pack acrylic primer and painted inside and out in the final colour, then flatted and polished for the finest results. All our paintwork is carried out in a controlled environment low bake oven with the latest HVLP equipment and in house mixing scheme for optimum results. |
 |
| When the chassis substructure is returned to our workshop we begin the re assembly
process, starting with the suspension, steering and brakes. All the components are
totally stripped and inspected and either restored or renewed. All the components are finished in gloss black epoxy coating or zinc coated. |
 |
| The engine is totally dismantled and chemically washed. The cylinder head and block
are pressure tested; the water jackets are acid cleaned and all other components i.e.
crankshaft, conrods, camshaft, oil pump and gear wheels are thoroughly checked and measured for wear. Engine rebuilding is done in house, each engine has the crankshaft, conrods, pistons, front pulley, flywheel and clutch dynamically balanced
to maximise smooth running. The cylinder head is rebuilt to use lead free fuel with
stainless steel valve and prosperous bronze valve guides. Performance enhancements
such as gas flowed and alloy cylinder heads, high lift camshaft etc. etc can be added to individual requirements. Gearboxes, overdrives and rear axles are cleaned and thoroughly inspected. Any rebuilding work is sub contracted to a specialist, which we find is the most cost effective option. |
 |
| The engine bay is then meticulously fitted up with new wiring loom, pipe work,
cables and clips etc. The rebuilt engine and gearbox, which have been
finished in their original colour metallic green, are carefully lowered and placed
onto the painted chassis substructure. |
 |
| Once the rebuilt carburettors, dynamo,
distributor, starter motor and radiator are fitted, we then bring the project to a running
and driving skeleton before refitting all the exterior body panels with ultimate care
and attention to detail. As we reassemble the car each nut and bolt is greased before fitting and all inaccessible areas are sprayed with waxoyl anti corrosion protection. |
 |
| Retriming is carried out in house, to the original colour schemes in either leather or
the original ambla vinyl, with hoods in vinyl or mohair. If required, our trim department can offer a bespoke trim service to your specification and colour choice. |
 |
| With the trim completed. Finally we fit the new wheels, tyres and start road testing and fault finding. Once final adjustments have been carried out the car is ready for delivery. |
 |
We also offer restoration tailored to your specification or budget.
